The Misfirings Of Governor Obaseki By Edoko Wilson Edoko

FREEPRESS – The tensed political atmosphere of Edo State resulting from the endless cross-fires between the aspiring godfather, Governor Obaseki against Comrade Adams Oshiomhole calls for concern, especially as the 2020 Edo gubernatorial election draws near.

It came as a shock that Governor Obaseki at a political gathering could say that the man who singlehandedly made him governor, and currently the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, is not a member of APC?

This comment clearly shows the desperation of a drowning man who Oshiomhole, had done even the unthinkable to foist him on Edo people as Governor in 2016.

However, such laughable comment exposes Obaseki’s naivety in understanding the true dynamics of our politics. It is really unfortunate.

Regrettably, Obaseki’s misfiring did not stop there – he also alleged that the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), had directed him to deal with Oshiomhole. It is puzzling how the desperation to govern Edo by all means could have driven Obaseki into lying against the President? What audacity to have done this knowing President Buhari’s stance on adherence to party constitution and discipline. It beats the imagination that the President could mandate a Governor to deal with the party’s National Chairman.

And then, for a man who claims his grouse with APC chieftains is that he refused to share government’s money to them, now reversing to gift Oshiomhole with four (4) cows and ten (10) bags of rice drives home the allegation that Obaseki has a penchant for contradictions. How can a man send you gifts and the next day he claim you are not his National Chairman, in addition to saying that the same man will be sanctioned by same you?

Quoting Governor Obaseki: “Any person doing anti-party activities, President Muhammadu Buhari has asked us to deal with them. We have been told to go back to organize our party. That’s why we are here. As a ruling party in the state, we have done a lot for the Edo people, moving the state forward progressively, but the EPM (Edo Political Movement) are afraid of progress and will do anything to ensure we don’t get another term.”

It’s sad that this is coming from a man who has grossly disrespected the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the APC and it’s leadership on several occasions? Various reconciliation moves by the leadership of the party has been turned down by Governor Obaseki. On that ground, one may then ask the question: who is actually engaging in anti-party activities?. Who is acting the script of a spoiler here?

A man who mobilized thugs with tax payers’ money with the intention of causing mayhem in the state and stopping Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu and his supporters from joining his party, isn’t involved in anti-party? Is declaring vacant the seats of Edo state house of assembly members who also happen to be his own party members not anti-party?

Lastly, the Governor accused his own party members of sabotaging his government by deliberately setting fire to major markets in the state. Instead of providing fire extinguishing equipment and addressing major developmental lacuna in governance, Obaseki is busy chasing shadows and engaging in his self-serving petty politics at the detriment of Edo people.

Having established the character of Obaseki, no doubt in the coming days as pressure mounts on him, we should be ready for more misfiring from the “wake and sleep” governor.
